Only The Shadows Move

Kevin is a young theater director from Hong Kong, who is brainstorming ideas for his next play with his pals. On the other side of the globe, Frank, a middle-aged hairdresser in Berlin, is performing his daily routine. Coincidences lead them to befriend each other, although their phones set the parameters of how the “friendship” should evolve.

The title of “Only the Shadows Move” is a reference to “The Wall Jumper” by Peter Schneider, a novel-cum-reportage that tells the true stories of Cold-War-era Berlin. Only the shadows of planes, when projected onto the ground, are the only things that can move over the wall. Some years ago, I migrated from Hong Kong to Berlin, and I began to reminisce on the mobility of the contemporary individual as the basis of this trans-regional film project. The shadow is the first form of human representation; it cannot be separated from the subject, but extends beyond our capabilities to tell the story of the static, silenced subject.
