My work titled “Novena” is a piece dedicated to my grandfather who recently passed away and in reference to the nine days of prayer enacted by Catholics after the passing of a loved one. In this sculpture and the images within it, I want to present the brief stages of life that I only know through photo albums and stories from my parents, as well as the gaps of information that can never be filled now that he has passed away. The images I have presented within the sculpture are taken from photographs, and represent the small bits of his life that I do know – but the images are vague and indecipherable at times. Just like the ripped canvases, the knowledge that I have of him is incomplete, and I am unable to piece them together as a whole painting.
